Abstract

The Krishi call centre was launched in June 2014 and offers real-time advice on farming issues in Bangladesh. This is an initiative of Practical Answers working with the Ministry of Agriculture. A case study of a successful solution to a fishery problem by the call centre is as follows: Mr. Abul Kalam is a student of Bogra Azizul Haque College. He lives in a small village named Dihigram in the Bogra district, Bangladesh with his family. He has a pond which is about 35 decimals in area beside his house. Generally people use the pond to bath and for daily household work. A few years ago he became informed about fish culture especially carp fish. He started to culture fish traditionally in his pond during the following stocking season. Due to lack of experience he did not have the expected profit from his farm or fish he stocked. He usually did not use any fertilizer in his pond for the growth of natural feed for fish but used to supply some rice bran in intervals of 10-15 days. In February 2015, Mr. Kalam heard about the Krishi Call Centre on Bangladesh Television (BTV). Meanwhile he saw that some of his neighboring fish farmers were using different fertilizers for their ponds. He got confused whether he needs to use fertilizer in his pond or not. To get help with this he called the Krishi Call Centre. The fisheries executive explained him why fertilizer is necessary; the dosage of different fertilizers to use and the harmful consequences of using too much fertilizer in a pond. Mr. Kalam followed the Krishi Call Centre's advice about fertilizers and also began to supply feed on a daily basis for his fish that season. By the end of the season he sold about 600 kg carp fishes from which he gained around 35000 taka profit.
