Abstract

Mr Alauddin, Service Provider, Fisheries supplies Mohishlutee Bazar, Union: Magura Binod, Upzila: Taras, District: Sirajgonj Mr Alauddin has a small shop in the bazaar where he sells fish feed and other fisheries supplies. He is one of about three local suppliers in the area. Background: For the last 20 years his main occupation has been a mix of agriculture, fisheries and business. He owns 2 acres of land and has 8 ponds – 6 of his own and 2 leased in. He grows rice, lentils and mustard. He initially funded his business by leasing out some of his land. Afterwards the business grew and within 4 years he was able to get his land back. He has two children (boys), both graduate students. One is married, the other helps him with his business. He is well-enough off not to suffer monga. The last time he was hard-up was in 1988 when there were severe floods. Project involvement: He met the local project field facilitator in the village and became interested in the project. He joined 4 months ago and has been given 2 days’ training in market assessment then 3 days training in skills development. He has facilitated producers’ groups skills training and he is supplying fish feed to 150 producer group households. Benefits: Previously he knew about open pond fisheries using carp fish species, but he did not know about growing tilapia in fish cages. He had heard about it on TV/radio, but he did not know how to do it. Now, many people are coming to him for information about tilapia because they know he has been trained. He estimates that 20% additional people are coming to him. He is also getting more business directly from the producer groups, as the project supplies only 14kg of fish food for each participant, whereas a total of 30kg is required for each fish cage. So members of the producer groups buy from him. Future plans: He wants to stay in the fisheries business as he sees a big demand in the future.
