Abstract

The micro hydro system in Chipendeke was completed in June 2010. They have connected 36 households as well as the school, clinic and businesses. Up to now the system has generated 7 megawatts of power. Currently they find people do not buy enough electricity for the system to make a good profit. Households pay £30 to set up a connection plus the cost of their own cables. Connection fee is $32 if you participated in the construction of the project $70 for other individuals and $100 for a business. Cost of energy is 16 cents per kilowatt hour (pkh) for households, 32 cents pkh for businesses and 10 cents pkh for the school and clinic. The system has suffered two major breakdowns since inception, but they have been able to make the repairs themselves. They do have problems with water flow in the dry season and sometimes there is no power because of this.Mr Senga has written a book about his experience.
