Abstract

Slwa is married with 4 children (3 boys and 1 girl) and lives in El Fashir, Darfur.  Slwa has an improved stove but does not have a Low-Smoke Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) stove. Slwa doesn’t suffer with health problems but would like to change from charcoal and wood because she finds it expensive and time consuming to cook on. "I can’t even compare to what it was like before. We are now saving wood and controlling smoke is easier." Slwa’s young son (9 months old) was with her while she was cooking, he was unwell with a chest infection but was recovering well. "I want to get rid of charcoal and wood. It’s expensive. I would like to save time. With extra time, I would like to gather with other women, teach my children things and spend more time with them. [with the extra money from the savings] I would like to improve my home and ‘pamper’ my children." "Before, I was using a three stone stove. It was worse than this, but what else to do. I take transport to the shop to get the fuel [for the fire]. It costs 20 SDG. It takes more than an hour to finish one meal. First I had a three stone stove, now the improved stove. The next will be LPG."
