Community Led Approaches Complimenting Sustainable Service Delivery for WASH (5000422)
Abstract
Bengo secondary school, Ward 17 The community are building a new sanitation block to replace one that had become dilapidated. The school has children from 11-16. They are building 8 toilets for boys, 8 for girls and 1 for staff. Two builders have been trained for the job and they have passed on these skills to 4 others. The project is a community initiative. They have made their own bricks and sourced their own sand so have only had to buy in mesh wire and cement. The building will take another 3 weeks to complete. The team will move to build at another school when this project is finished. Hand washing facilities will be included outside the block with water provided from a nearby borehole. Mpokiseng Ncube is 15 and attends the school. Her favourite subjects are Maths and English. When she leaves school she would like to become a teacher. She is quite shy. When being photographed she was reluctant to smile because of her discoloured teeth. Many people in the area have the same problem – possibly dental fluorosis caused by excess fluoride in the local water supply. She has attended hygiene training sessions at school. “We were taught to wash our hands after going to the toilet to prevent germs.” The children were helping with the project in place of their parents – their job was to fill wheelbarrows with cement and fetch water from the borehole. “I am very happy to be helping with this which will give us facilities that we are lacking.”
