Abstract

Ibrahim Isa'a Ibrahim is married with 10 children aged between 27 and 7. He has 4 daughters and 6 sons. Ibrahim has been a farmer in the village of Zum Zum in North Darfur, Sudan for over twenty years.  “Water access is the biggest problem we face. We are always thinking about new techniques. The refugee camp [gave] us a problem, as we now have to share everything and there are 100,000 people in the camp. Everyone who has land, they give a piece of it to the needy so that they can cultivate it.” “The sand creeping is having a huge impact. The land is no longer fertile. Irrigated land will give around twenty sacks of produce. The camp has had the biggest impact. There is less land. The people in the camp are suffering from unemployment, so we have been giving them labouring work.” “The camp was established in 2007 and it has increased every time there has been a conflict. Before the camps, people were not too many and we had regular rain. The land was bigger and the rain was often. There used to be many trees. After the camp, most of the trees were cut, this has definitely affected rainfall. A little rain came through the wadi but we had no time to benefit. The wadi’s used to be full of water, but not anymore. After they came, we shared our resources.”
