Abstract

Like most of the people living in the area, the 24-year-old uses wood to cook with on an open fire inside the home. Edith shown lighting the fire, cooking and feeding her child. In the south people rely on small fires inside the home for cooking using, fuelled by wood, animal dung and crop waste. This method of cooking is a killer, as smoke released and trapped inside and fills homes with thick, toxic smoke which isinhaled often leaving them vulnerable to all to respiratory illness such as chronic bronchitis and pneumonia and eye problems. Every year 1.6 million people die from illnesses linked to smoke in the home. Collecting wood for fuel is time consuming for women and is detrimental to the local environment.
