Abstract

Gorkha district, Nepal Objective: to increase income and build capacitiy of the Chepangs, one of the most disadvantaged ethnic groups in Nepal, by providing them equal access to basic infrastructure services. Practical Action Nepal set out to demonstrate practical solutions for these energy-poor communities by implementing various low cost, community managed renewable energy technologies within the village, and by training local citizens to run and manage them. The project area ia a cluster of 6 villages, Thumka, Hiklung, Bhanjyang, Kangtung, Luprang, and Kaudi where a total 73 Chepang households (563 people) have directly benefited from many different technologies that have given them lighting, sanitary systems, irrigation, transportation, extra income, cooking oil, and more. In order to develop a clean and sustainable infrastructure in the villages, Practical Action Nepal implemented the following in the project area: • 14 biogas plants • 300 watt solar wind hybrid • 2.0 kw peltric and 500 watt pico hydro • 2 ICS and 47 smoke hood chimneys • 10 ecosan toilets • 12 solar lanterns • 3 solar dryers and2 churi oil expellers • 10 drip and 10 sprinkler irrigation systems • Establishment of co-operatives and committees. • Installation of Tuin (river crossing) The ‘Renewable Energy Village’ concept has been instrumental in raising awareness of the beneficiaries and wider stakeholders through demonstrating different locally suited renewable energy technology options and how these can be integrated with other basic services to maximize benefits to the communities. These simple yet practical technologies have had a vast number of direct and indirect effects on villagers, ranging from social and health improvements to financial gains. The main outcomes of the project involved: • Increased access to clean energy • Access to market/Income generation • Improved health & sanitation • Increase in child education • Reduction of drudgery • Increased community strength and power
