Abstract

There are multiple communities along the River Beni in Bolivia, which are only accessible by boat. To access the village of Altamarani you must climb up a very steep river bank.   Until Practical Action installed a solar panel to help give access to clean fresh water, the Altermarani community were drinking dirty river water and having to climb up and down the steep bank with heavy loads.  Practical Action also built two new toilets, a shower and wash hand basins outside the village school, which is now mainly used by the school children.  Although there is still not running water inside the school, Practical Action provided it with a water filter which cleans the river water so that the children do not get ill.  Pictures show the children handwashing and drinking water from the new facilities providing fresh clean water.
