Abstract
Fathia Haimd Yagub lives in Shagra, North Darfur. She has 9 children - 2 boys and 7 girls. Fathia explained: “before the area was full of trees, they just cut them. They didn’t know the environment impact. Practical Action taught us about the environment and why we shouldn’t cut trees. The trees are important to improving the soil.” “We are making compost with the leaves of the trees. We feel like the trees have helped rainfall. We have also had training in how to make crescent shaped terraces. We will benefit from the new dams. We have done everything through Participatory Action Plan Development (PAPD).” “We learnt how to diversify our crops. We did not know that we could grow other crops in the sandy soil. Hibiscus, ground nut etc. We keep helping researchers to find out more in the area – data collection etc. Sand creeping has been a problem. We need to build shelters. We will mobilise the community to do this.” The community currently grow gum Arabic trees. They eat the gum but would like to sell it. “My hope is to make Darfur very green, to stop chopping the trees and provide seedlings for the trees. We don’t have a community centre, but we would like one.”
