Abstract
The objective of this project is to achieve a sustainable increase of farm productivity of 1,300 small land holding households (HH) (7,800 people) owning less than 0.3 hectares of land by 50%, through increased access to agriculture technology, inputs, infrastructure and services in Dailekh, Kalikot and Doti Districts of Nepal, construction of small scale irrigation systems and rain water harvesting ponds for poor farmers in mid-western Nepal. This is part of a larger EC project bringing similar benefits to 10,000 HHs. The project targets Dalits (untouchables), women, ethnic minorities and small farm holders including Brahmin/ Chhetri communities who depend on agricultural labour, and unskilled off-farm labour for meeting their daily food needs. The hill and mountain districts of far and mid-western Nepal have been hit by persistent food insecurity. The major attributing factor has been identified as poor local production, mainly due to increasing climate variability leading to frequent droughts. This lack of water for food production means farmers are only able to produce enough food to last 6 months. This demands that they not only produce more to last the whole year, but that they have a surplus for sale. construction of farmer managed small scale irrigation systems; development of business plans for sharing the benefits of community infrastructure and formulation of local and district level food security strategies for the resource poor farmers. Support with business plans and strategies will make farmers’ efforts sustainable.
