Abstract

Age 30 Village name: Syabru Population: 1,800 Family: Sancha is married and has 4 children, aged 12, 10, 5 and 2. Her husband works as a mason. Sancha makes small stones for use in the building process. She works around 3 days a week, when she is able to. She used to live in a small village called Haku and had a smallholding. However, the village was totally swept away in a landslide during the earthquake. For a few months they stayed near the village and lived in a cave, but a year ago, they took the decision to move to the nearby town of Syabru. She lives outside the town in a shared house with her cousin and her family. They were left with nothing after the earthquake and have to spend most of their money on rent. When we met them they were sitting by the side of the road around 2,000 feet above the town. The wind was bitterly cold. They have to collect the stone from a landslip and carry it up a treacherously steep slope in a basket carried on their head.
