Abstract
Neel and his wife Savitri live in a small village in Nepal, they are old and feel unable to change their lives. Their children have left home and live in the city and check on them from time to time. Their home was badly affected in the earthquake and they currently have a temporary kitchen on the side of their home. The kitchen is made from sheet metal and gets extremely hot in the sun and during cooking. It’s hard but during the monsoon season it’s impossible to cook outside the house. They currently cook on a traditional stove, they did have a portable stove but decided to give it to one of their children as they were worried about their health. “The traditional stove is smoky, I cough and my eyes hurt. “With biogas, none of this happens. “I used to have asthma but now it is getting better. “All children are in the city and they check on them. “We gave our portable stove to our children. We thought it would be good for them. “Our children used to suffer from coughs and fever, we had to take them to the hospital. “We tried to keep the children away from the smoke, but it was hard. “When the children were little, they helped to cook. “Our home has been affected by the earthquake, it is a temporary kitchen. “It’s not easy to find firewood. “We go and find firewood when we can. It takes 2-3 hours. “Food tastes better on the traditional stove but it takes longer. “I try to cook early in the morning when it’s less hot. You get very sweaty.”
