Abstract

Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture for Nutrition and Food Security (POSAN-FS) Location: Nepal – Achham, Doti, Bajhang and Bajura Districts of Far Western Development Region April 2014 to March 2016 Principal funder: European Union Partners: SEBAC Nepal, Achham and Saipal Development Society, Bajhang Background:  In Nepal, 39.9 per cent of national population consumes minimum of the prescribed calories level. More than 50.4 per cent of children below 5 years of age suffer from malnutrition, 45 per cent are underweight and 43 per cent have stunted growth. The situation in the Far West Development Region is worse with 44.9 per cent people consuming less calories than that of the prescribed level. Achham, Bajhang, Bajura and Doti are chronically food insecure. Households are barely able to produce enough food to last the year. The project is working to address the food and nutritional insecurity issues in these districts. Activities: increasing productivity of goat, vegetable and spice crops by enhancing technical knowhow of farmers on improved production practices, establishing micro-irrigation facilities and providing improved inputs and technology like improved breed and seeds, feed, agro-vet services and other production input services. We’ve developed leader farmers and local extension agents to support the farmers.  Introducing climate field schools to improve the resilience of farmers. We’ve trained women farmers and demonstrated technologies to capacitate them. We’re supporting the key market actors in goat, vegetable and spice value chains to strengthen them and make them pro-poor and inclusive. We’ve adopted participatory market systems development (PMSD) approach for analysis and intervention design. Linking women farmers to financial institute for better access to finance and established collection centre to link small producers to urban markets. We’ve developed cooperative managed vegetable and goat resource centres and trained the committees on market management. Campaigns to increase nutritional awareness. We’re promoting backyard gardening and locally neglected nutritious crops to improve the nutritional security. We’re supporting the local non-state actors for district food and nutritional security plan preparation and establishment of a basket fund.
