Abstract

The greenest and magnificent natural landscape with elegant tribal culture and life style Koraput district also has gender inequality and acute poverty. According to a study (GAAC) by Practical Action, most women in these hilly terrains depend on firewood for regular cooking though they suffer from eye itching, respiratory issues along with non-availability of enough firewood leads them to walk a far away. There, came an experimented innovation where the local women from Sailabala SHG has emerged as the manufacturer of low smoke ‘Access cook stoves’ which uses less firewood (up-to 50 per cent than traditional methods) with saving a lot of time. Jambati Jani of Cherengaguda village of Padmapur GP is quite satisfied with the new cook-stove she got from the Paraba (Local Festival). Now-a-days her single thatched house is not getting blackish because of the smoke nor is the cooking time too long. She is able to finish up everything soon than before after using the ACCESS cook stove. This also now reduced the regular eye itching and other respiratory issues along with saves a lot of time when these women can do other productive work. Being the manufacture of the cook stove, the Sailabala SHG from Puruna Dumuriput village has sold almost 30 such cook stoves and along with 11 other entrepreneur groups they are doing the marketing and selling of cook stoves. Now all these groups came together and have formed ACCESS Grameen Mahila Udyog (AGMU) and registered as a small scale industry which in fact takes care of climate changes and nature. Now they have started keeping log book for assessing the impact of the cook stove on climate. Informally they claim, now the cooking time has been reduced to up to 50 per cent and same with use of firewood. The volume of their contribution may look lesser, but their efforts are definitely have opened and window for rethinking about our development. To serve different needs of lifestyle if solutions can be made keeping nature and climate issues in mind then, its sustainability will also sustain the natural balance. At least this is something Project Access is exhibiting at this moment in Koraput and these women are the flag bearers.
