Abstract
One of the worst coastal El Niño floods in Peruvian history left more than 20,000 people homeless. The situation in shelters became increasingly difficult, with people suffering from a lack of safe water and adequate sanitation. Flooding of four rivers in the region blocked main roads and isolated several communities, complicating the provision of food and clean water. Practical Action provided disaster relief for seven poor communities in Piura where the local water systems had been destroyed which could lead to an epidemic. 8,350 beneficiaries in the communities of Polvorines, Cuatro de Mayo, Las Montero y Alejandro Toledo, Los Jardines, La Encantada, Villa Batanes and José Carlos Mariátegui, received sanitary education, basic water and sewerage systems, recovery and implementation of safe water sources and systems, provision of 1,250 family water-kits and home storage systems, support for water extraction, refilling and compacting waterlogged areas with pumps and organised workforces, implementation of pulverized aspersion equipment to fumigate homes and puddles, installation of 8,350 mosquito nets, plus protective equipment, among other solutions, which represent a possibility of survival and recovery for this Peruvian families, who have lost almost everything.
