Abstract
Mohammed Ali – Leader of CBOs benefitting from this work, Grigir Dam, Turkook, Kassala. The project was completed in September so the rainy season was nearly out. We see the potential to cultivate the farm in the coming year. We used to try and cultivate this area and now the project is working we will benefit. I am a farmer, I have a farm here. I grow sorgum. I am looking at the demonstration farm and am interested. (Practical Action has set this up – see images eg. hibiscus growing). I might grow another type of cereal or sorgum. I am hoping to grow more. The community was involved in the creation of the dam as casual workers, handling materials, etc. The land system was built up before and every person has 2 feddon. Before this system, water was an issue for farmers. When the rains came and the stream flooded every person would try and divert the water to the land he was farming. Sometimes the government or an NGO might try to make a temporary intervention. Now work will be more systematic, more people will benefit. The irrigated area is now much bigger than before, it has more potential and there is potential for more farmers. We still need more help – with tools and improved seed varieties for example. We recognise that we need to work on the soil to increase the infiltration of water, at the moment the soil is very compacted. I am an agropastoralist. I also have animals. Another big problem we have is with the invasion of mesquite and calatropis (bushes/shrubs) these will need to be cleared.
