Abstract

This brochure outlines Practical Action’s approach to managing plastic waste in humanitarian settings, focusing on the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. With nearly one million displaced people generating large volumes of waste, poor plastic disposal has created serious environmental and public health risks. In partnership with UNICEF, Practical Action introduced plastic recycling plants that collect, segregate, clean, shred, melt and remould plastic waste into useful products. The initiative reduces environmental hazards, improves camp hygiene, and transforms waste into educational items such as alphabet blocks for learning centres. The document highlights a practical, low-cost and scalable solution that turns a pressing waste challenge into social and environmental value within densely populated humanitarian contexts.
