SEÑORA ELOISA ABARCA LALANGI from the San Ignacio in Cajamarca, Peru had her improved stove installed in September 2015 project She is delighted with it because it uses far less wood and there is no more smoke in her kitchen. A partnership with a coffee producer’s co-operative offered a micro credit scheme helped families pay for the stoves and training for people to install them. Project location: Jaen, San Ignacio, Cajamarca, Peru PIN: 5001022 Dates: 02/01/2015 -01/04/2016 The project was implemented by Practical Action in partnership with the Multiple Services Cooperative CENFROCAFE and the credit union APROCREDI, with funding from Sustainable Access to Renewable Energy thermal (FASERT) the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). The direct beneficiaries were 700 coffee and rice farmers and their households in both provinces. A group of entrepreneurs were trained in the development and installation of kitchens. Health professionals indicate about three respiratory diseases found strongly associated with exposure to wood smoke: acute infections of the lower respiratory tract in children under 5 years, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer.
