Abstract

Age 34 Village name: Kalika Population: 900 households Family: Husband, four daughters and a son. They are aged between 17 and 9. Chandra works in the resource centre and is the leader of a women-only co=operative. Her husband is a small-scale farmer. The resource centre pools demand in the village so that prices are kept low. It manages to avoid middle-men in the buying process and also makes transport costs much lower by arranging transport at a large scale. She makes sure prices are also transparent and offers advice and support on building techniques and options available. There is also a control on the quality. By ensuring that the houses meet regulations, people are able to access government finance to pay for the building. Chandra’s house just about survived the quake, but needed lots of repairs doing. Her chicken farm was completely destroyed and she lost everything in there. However, now she knows that she can geta fair price for building materials and she sees lots of her friends building now homes, she is planning to do the same herself. https://practicalaction.org/supply-chain Quotes and more images saved locally
