Abstract

13339 Childre from Luprang, Dhumli Chowk VDC-8, with the wind turbine in the background which provides power to the village. Practical Action has helped the community to install a wind/solar renewable energy hybrid system that provides 300W of power. The wind turbine generates 200W and the solar panel 100W. This DC (direct current) power is used to charge the battery in the power house which is 128 Ahr (Ampere hour?). The battery converts to AC power (alternating current) using a transformer and the power is transmitted via a power line to the village 200m away. The system feeds 11 lights in homes using compact florescent lamps (energy efficient bulbs). One of these bulbs uses 8 amps to power a 40W light. The 5 houses each have 2 lamps - there is also one street lamp. They can be used for 2-3 hours per day on the basis of the power generated by the renewable system. The electricity is used for a whole range of things. Children can read and study in the evening - the light is much better quality than the kerosene lamps used to give. Families save money because they don't have to buy kerosene. Women don't have to spend so much time travelling to the market to buy kerosene - so they spend more time on the land growing crops which also helps them make a better living. And it's much safer to cook the evening meal because women can actually see what theyare doing. The Renewable Energy Village (or rather cluster of 5 small villages,) benefit from a range of low-cost community-managed renewable energy technologies. The purpose is to compare and demonstrate their use. The technologies used are micro- and pico-hydro, a wind-solar hybrid system, solar lanterns, biogas plants, improved cook stoves and a smoke hoods, 10 ecosan toilets and solar dryers for processing/preserving agro products. However energy provision alone is not enough and drip irrigation systems have also been introduced. Therefore integrated technologies can achieve more. There has also been training in marketing local products. Renewable Energy Village - Dhumli Chowk VDC-8,, Gorkha
