Abstract

The Solar Water Pumps in North Darfur project aims to improve the availability of water for sedentary and pastoralist communities in North Darfur. 8620 individuals in Mogabil and Kweim village clusters will directly benefit from this project, in addition to 2,000 pastoralists and their livestock. This project is also expected to benefit a significant number of other people from the surrounding villages. Improving access to water in these two communities should also go a long way towards reducing the occurrences of local conflict and by bringing different livelihood and ethnic groups together over this natural resource, the project will make a lasting contribution to improving cooperation and trust between them.  The area of Mogabil is about 65km north of El Fashir and is comprised of 5 villages. An old man at the community inception meeting explained: "we have only one working water pump which is inefficient. There is not enough water in the village, we are thirsty! Women walk for 3 hours to collect water for their families".  Many children in the community miss school because it takes so long to collect water. A woman from Mogabil said: "we have no drinking water, no water for cleaning and washing, no education for women, all that is because of the water problem".  Talking of the expected outcome of the project, Mohamed Siddig, North Darfur Area Coordinator said to the group at the meeting: "all of you will be watered, both farmers and pastoralists, no more conflicts... you are partners".  Development and improvement of health and education is expected and an extension of agriculture will be a direct impact.
