Abstract

Ram Lal Shrestha and Ram Kumari Shrestha live in a small wooden house in the village of Kolputar, it overlooks the river.   Inside the house, the couple have a traditional stove, which is where they cook all of their meals. They have no children.   “I do not suffer from smoke but my wide does.”   “We came from a nearby village, we have been here 4 years. We came to make a living. We wanted to a small tea shop.”   “Our old house collapsed in the earthquake and we have been staying here ever since.”   Ram Kumari began to explain “I do all the cooking. I have used this kind of stove forever.”   “It is smokey, sometimes my eyes hurt.”   “It’s all I can afford.”   “There is no-one to collect firewood, so we go ourselves.”   “We go anywhere we can find wood. Every 2-3 days we go to collect wood. It takes 2-3 hours.”   “It’s difficult but we take breaks, we have no-one else.”   “I cough, especially when cooking. I have a hard time breathing.”   “It takes one hour to cook for the two of us.”   “I cook rice, lentil soup and vegetable curry.”   “I have heard about smoke hoods, they must be good.”   “No matter what, I have to cook on this stove, there is no-one else.”
