Abstract

Wellington and Venezia are representatives of a group of 8 women and one man. They were trained in waste management in March 2015 and started a waste management business on 15 April 2015. Every month Wellington and Venezia collect 9 tons of waste from supermarkets and shops.  It takes three weeks to collect this amount of waste and the group receive US $30 per ton. Wellington is married with no children. Before the project he had no income and was involved with the youth club.  Now he can pay rent and school fees for family members.   Venezia has six children - one girl and five boys who are all grown up and live in Bindura.  “Life before the project was difficult because there was no source of income, but now I have an income and we also have other businesses as a group like raising chickens. We hope to get a machine crusher.” Crushed waste can earn more money.
