Nakuru goes High-tech to restore its former glory Located 160 kilometres from Nairobi is Nakuru, once best known for its flamingos and dubbed "the cleanest town in East Africa", but now increasingly famous for the deteriorating state of its environment. Squeezed between the Menengai Crater and Lake Nakuru, its burgeoning population and poorly regulated industrial operations have led to uncontrolled urban sprawl. With over 400,000 people, Nakuru's demand for housing, water, sanitation and roads has increasingly strained the available resources and left the municipal council unable to meet its residents' basic needs. This threatens its survival as a habitable area and is dramatically undermining the Lake Nakuru ecosystem.
