Abstract

Fulkumari Mahato, 36, resides in Kolhuwa, Nawalparasi. Ever since her husband’s death two years back she has been the sole bread winner of her family. "I used to plant wheat and mustard on my one acre of land. Sometimes I also tried to cultivate off-season vegetables but have not been able to fetch good produces," Fulkumari says. A year back Practical Answers Project implemented in her village. She got an opportunity to participate an interaction event organised to deliver knowledge and skills to the farmers in her village. In the interaction an expert from Agriculture Services Centre responded various enquiries asked by the farmers. Fulkumari learnt about home-made pesticide, its preparation process and methods to prevent disease infestation in vegetable plantations. "I had no money to buy expensive pesticide and therefore, I could not fetch good return. However, when I learnt to make home-made pesticide with locally available materials from the interaction and apply this knowledge in my own vegetable cultivation. It really makes different," says Fulkumari adding," I have been able to produce organic vegetable." The home-made pesticide is cost effective and farmers can make it with locally available herbs. Gone are the days for an avid farmer Fulkumari that she does not worry about insects attack in her vegetable farming. She happily shares," The knowledge I received from the interaction has made significant changes. I have earned 50, 000 rupee selling vegetable this year. Now I am more encouraged and will continue to use home-made pesticide in my vegetable farming."
