Abstract
Lal is 48 years old, he is married and has 1 son who is 12 years old. The earthquake destroyed his main home which used to be 2 stories high. He now has 2 homes, one which has been rebuilt and is fitted with a smoke hood, the other house has a traditional stove. Lal owns a tea and grocery shop. He makes the tea over a traditional stove which means that he is surrounded by smoke for most of the day. His small village is home to 18 families. Some of the families were badly affected by the earthquake, in the worst cases their homes were destroyed or it was too dangerous to live in their fragile homes. Access to the village is difficult as the terrain is mountainous. “The difference is obvious, in the house with the smoke hood it is clear, I can see things.” “The old house is smokey all the time and the walls are black. Sometimes we cough.” “Sometimes my eyes are blurry. I went to see a doctor and they gave me glasses. The doctor told me not to sit in front of the fire because of the smoke.” “But I can’t be away from smoke. I have a tea shop and grocery shop. I have to make the tea.” His house with the traditional stove is currently damaged from the earthquake, he explained “Eventually, when I have repaired the house, I will install a smoke hood.” “We heard about smoke hoods from the nearby villages.” “We had used the traditional stove since always.” “The Doctor used to tell us not to sit infront of the smoke, but we had no choice.” When asked about the new smoke hood and stove, Lal explained “The smoke doesn’t spread over the roon. It uses less firewood and we can dry meat easily.”
