Abstract

Sushmita Duwadi lives in the small village of Airi in Nepal. She is 18 years old and is in class 10 of school. Water is a priority for her community. Their natural spring has almost dried up. The supplies in taps are now irregular. The local reservoir, which was the water source has been affected by the earthquake and has changed the water direction. There is little water left and it has affected the flow to villages. Before the earthquake they had a natural spring that they could use for drinking water, cooking and cleaning. This now only fills a canister every 8 hours. They now have to walk 2kms every day to get water they need. Sushmita has to get up at 4am to put the jug under the spring in order for it to be filled up by lunchtime. This one jug isn’t enough for her and her family’s needs so she has to walk 1 hour to the next water point after school to get more water (and then 1 hour back). The secondary school in Chipani (neighbouring village) was totally destroyed by the earthquake. If the earthquake had hit on a weekday and not a Saturday hundreds of children would have been in the school. The school was closed for 2 months. They now have temporary classrooms. Sushmita has dreams for the future “I would like to be a nurse”.
