Abstract

Jane Nyangoni heads the Waste Management Club in Ward 7, Bindura town, Zimbabwe. She told us "We started the Club in 2013 after notice a bad situation in the ward.  There was waste everywhere and our children had diarrhea. So we started a programme to clear our ward and get an income.  We have made toilet cleaner our of xxx acid and dye.  Some of the products that we have made from waste material such as old sacks and wool.  We’ve made seating mats and some bags made using drinks containers.  We also make floor polish from plastic, paraffin and red oxide." "We learnt these skills by members of the club attending courses such as waste management training from Practical Action. We don’t have a proper outlet for our products at the moment, we sell to people when they ask." The Club also makes clothing from the recycled waste, such as hats and skirts.   Our club vision is to increase production, but we need materials to make them and we need funding and support to do this.  We are also in the process of looking for markets to sell these items within Bindura town and also more widely.
