Abstract

El Punre This is a private micro hydro system that belongs to a family group, the Salazar Chávez, integrated by 6 members. This family runs a 184-hectare farm, called “El Punre”, which they inherited from their ancestors. El Punre is located in the district of La Encañada, in the province and region of Cajamarca. To get to this area one must drive some 40 Km along the Cajamarca – Celendín highway and then turn left in the direction of the mining settlement called Michiquillay (5 Km.), and then one must still drive another 12 Km along a bridle road that leads to the farm. The main economic activity of this family is agriculture. Their livestock production consists of breeding dairy cattle for the production of fresh milk which is sold to the NESTLÉ corporation, and their agricultural production, which is mostly for self consumption, includes crops such as potato, oca, olluco, barley, and broad bean. Their production of potato is mostly market oriented. The Salazar family has been producing fresh milk for several years now. To prevent its deterioration, the milk has to be cooled. To do so, the Salazar previously used a 24kW diesel system, but now they carry out this process using the MHS that was installed at their farm. Other local small producers also have access to this system. The MHS was built through a loan granted by the Fund for the Promotion of MHSs – FPM. This credit has currently been fully repaid.
