Abstract

"I am a widow. My husband died of old age several years ago. I have seven children to look after and they are all my responsibility. Life is difficult. Last year when the rains didn?t come, my crops failed completely. We have been so hungry since then, our bellies are empty. When the rains do fall it?s important that we save every drop. At the moment water just washes off the good soil, onto the sandy soil where we cannot grow a thing. The new earth embankment will keep the rainwater on the productive wadi soil. Our problems will end. I grow sesame and lentils and I know my harvests will improve. All the women in the village are so excited; we are going to help build the earth embankment with hand tools. I am very happy about it – too happy for words.”
