Abstract
Fatima Suliman Ahmed lives in El Fashir, Darfur and is married with 6 children (5 girls and 1 boy). Fatima has had a Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) stove since 2010 - she is part of the LPG Low-Smoke Stoves project but she used to cook with charcoal and wood. “I was really suffering from burning wood and charcoal. I can’t even describe how LPG has changed my life.” Fatima was diagnosed with asthma in 2003 “I started to get asthma attacks in 2003. When I burned wood and charcoal I felt like I could not breathe. Sometimes they would take me to hospital. I would start to cough and my chest felt small (tight). At first, my family were frightened and scared.” “We have medical insurance so we pay only a quarter of the cost. After many visits to the hospital, the Doctor told me to avoid burning wood. My husband also told me to avoid dusty weather. Nearby is a brick building yard [which is not good for my health].” “[Since LPG] I now have time to go to mosque, sell things at the school (Fatima makes falafel with her LPG stove and sells them at the school). LPG is used for making falafel, it’s much quicker. I save 100 SDG per month and I sell 15-20 falafels a day.” “I always kept my children away from the kitchen. When my mother and grandmother were young, life was better then. Now, they use bad quality trees because all the good quality trees are gone. Wood before did not affect you as much. I can cook fast and feel comfortable. This is the best for me.” “I spent 3-4 hours cooking before. Now, in 1 hour I can do everything. I was thinking about cooking while I was sleeping (she dreaded it). I recommend LPG to my friends. I tell them it’s very comfortable, has been a benefit and they should go and get it. Once I got LPG, my husband is now willing to help me.”
