Abstract
Fatima is married with 2 children (one girl aged 2 months and a boy). She lives in El Fashir, Darfur. Fatima is not a part of the Low-Smokes Stove, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) project, she currently cooks with charcoal and suffers from the smoke. She would like to change to LPG. "I am always buying from the shop. 1 sack costs 150 SDG, a small bag is 5 SDG and a big bag is 10 SDG. 1 sack lasts for a whole month. I also use 2 small bags of wood every week to made aseeda. When I cook, there is too much smoke, especially when I burn the wood. I have eye infections all the time. I have been affected ever since I was a child. Sometimes I feel like I am not able to breathe. It can be scary because of fires. When it’s Autumn, my mother, when she burns the fire, she does not feel it [on her skin]." Fatima has two small children, she explained how she tries to keep them away from the smoke but it’s sometimes impossible: "the problem is the youngest, she goes to sleep when I am cooking. I have to go to her when she cries. Sometimes I need her with me while I cook." This is not good for [the baby]’s health, as she is exposed to the thick black smoke. "My eldest currently has an eye infection. I am not able to get LPG because I don’t have enough money; it is not the right time for me. I would be willing to change. I think that wood and charcoal is not a good option. LPG will be better. LPG will save my life from burning – from the smoke or from the fire. – Fatima was afraid of her home burning down from catching on fire. "LPG will give me more time. I would like to spend more time with my children, I’d like to teach them things. I can work handcrafting. I can then make this into a business [with the extra time]. My main concern is the smoke. My eyes and my lungs. I don’t want the next generation to suffer like me. We need many miracles to change the situation."
