Abstract

Khir Kumari is 27 years old and lives in a small village in Dhading, Nepal. She is married with three sons and lives with her husband’s parents in a small house. Luckily, her home was not damaged by the earthquake, unlike some of her neighbours. Khir Kumari is responsible for preparing and cooking food for her whole family. She has a traditional stove, which causes smoke to blow into her face and fill her lungs. She suffers from eye problems and spends much of her small income from farming, on medication to treat her condition. “I am having problems with my eyes. I get blurred vision. My Doctor told me that it was made worse by getting mud into my eyes when working in the field. He told me that I had to stay away from smoke.  “My eyes get worse when I’m near the fire. “I have had problems with my eyes for around five months. It costs me 300 NR for the medication and I have to get it every 2-3 weeks. “I sometimes get chest pain and cough. “I worry about my children. “I have to take care of everyone. My children can’t help me, they are too young. “I spend two hours preparing each meal. “My eldest son had pneumonia when he was only six days old. He stayed in the hospital for seven days. The Doctor gave him medication but it didn’t do anything. “He still suffers from pneumonia now.  [due to his lungs being weaker] “The children always come near the fire because they want to be near me. “My Mother-in-Law has asthma and has asthma medication every week. “When I don’t have time, my Mother-in-Law has to help me. “I have to walk for three hours to get wood. “I have heard about smoke hoods. I’m sure with one there won’t be much smoke and I won’t have to suffer anymore.
