Abstract

Practical Action provided 50% of total cost and local entrepreneur provided remainder Additional cost after 100,000 taka material costs are: Grand total is around 120,000-130,000 taka depending project type and location Local entrepreneur collects 100 or 150 taka per month per light, this rate depends on light watt and beneficiaries economic condition. There are some running cost like battery water replacement in every 3-6 months, damage of light or replacement of any other parts. These costs are low compared to initial cost. Total 30-50 lights can be connected in our 400Wp system (average 40 lights, 5W per light typically). It is very important to use SMD LED light rather than traditional CFL light to get maximum lumen/lux per watt. More nano solar grid in close areas ensures better profit for the entrepreneur as he/she have to switch on the system every evening & switch off the system at 10/11 pm at night. There is some additional cost shown after installation which is operating cost (or cost of equipment replacement). Income is based on daily payment, 7 or 8 taka per day. Price of 100 gm kerosene is 8 taka (118 taka=1 GBP) which is widely used for lighting in rural areas of Bangladesh. So a local businessman can take it as additional income source plus social welfare. 5-10 NSG in close communities may ensure livelihood for one entrepreneur without doing much additional business/job. Replacement parts availability in nearby areas and technical/troubleshooting knowledge of local electrician is the main challenge here.
