Abstract
Mr Nour ur Islam, President of Producer Group Guolgram sunflower agriculture group Budonili, Union: Magura Binod, Upzila Taras, District Sirajgonj Background: Mr Islam is from the local area and his main occupation is agriculture. He is 50 years old and lives with his wife, 3 sons and one daughter. He owns 100 decimals of land (1 acre) where his main crops are mustard, boro rice, potato, dal, garlic and maize. He also owns a pond of 1.39 acres and 2 cows. His family help him but he has no outside help. He also has a tea stall in the village which makes 15,000 taka a month, giving 9,000 taka profit. His son manages the stall. When he was younger he faced monga for many years and had to borrow money or rice. Recently he has been OK, although 2007 was a bad year. Involvement in the project: He has been involved in the project for the last 4 months, following his meeting with local project facilitators at a community meeting and being selected as a marginal farmer. He received vegetable (red amaranth, kankun, bottle gourd, country bean) and mustard seed. He had a day’s training on cultivation of mustard using the correct fertiliser, and learnt how to plant in rows (instead of broadcasting), and ploughing 3 times (instead of 1-2) for mustard cultivation. He learnt about marketing produce collectively instead of individually. Benefits: He used to grow vegetables before, but now he has good quality seed and knows how to make and use compost, instead of only cow dung. He has had a much higher crop of vegetables. It is too early to say whether he will have higher production of mustard and he will know in a few months’ time. He used to market his produce individually, but now has learnt to market together with the producers group. Future plans: He wants to produce more crops, and use the additional money to get more land. He would like to also have other businesses, possibly fertiliser, groceries or clothes.
