Abstract
Through the project "Improving the living conditions of highland families", reducing environmental risks through access and sustainable management of basic services (known as Allimpaq), Practical Action has been working with 11 associations of producers (alpacas and potatoes) to improve access to safe water systems, environmental sanitation and waste management, leverage renewable energy for electricity generation and water heating, and optimize the use of biomass through improved stoves. The project benefits 6,500 residents of 22 rural communities of the Canchis province, in the districts of Maranganí, Sichuan and San Pablo, located about 3800 meters above sea level. The most important results of the period are as follows: • 1.014 people have gained access to safe water in their homes as a result of water systems that have been built by the project. • 24 filters are implemented and 15 biosand systems houses have been built. • We have strengthened the knowledge of 1,135 people (227 household heads, 136 heads and 91 heads of family) on the importance of rural sanitation in their homes, over 13 workshops and 206 home visits. • 672 people have toilets in their homes with microfilters for the disposal of solid waste, both organic and inorganic. • 1.032 people have improved stoves in their homes. • 1.190 people know the personal hygiene benefits of using a solar heater for showers in educational institutions and Toxaccota Quenamari. With the promotion of the healthy schools project for community development in Hualgayoc, in the department of Cajamarca, Practical Action has been working to improve access to clean water and sanitation for the health benefit of 100 children and teachers Chulipampa. The most important results of the period are as follows: • 127 people members of the Chulipampa educational community (students, teachers and parents) have access to safe water service and make use of proper sanitation, improving hygiene. • 70 children and 5 teachers benefit from a system of bathrooms, composed of toilets, sinks and showers. The bathrooms are separated for children and teachers, and include a septic tank. • Implementation of 3 hot showers installed, benefiting 70 children and 5 teachers.
