Increasing Resilience to Poverty of Rural Communities in Kassala State - IA11900008SUD
Abstract
Kassala. Water is diverted into channels, the water comes from the Eritrean border and to Gash river. This structure aims to divert water to irrigate the area to be cultivated. In one of the photos, Musa Ibrahim Musa – Project Engineer is standing on the control structure whos main function is to raise the water up to 1.7 m. This irrigates land above the dam, it’s then separated into 3 channels which irrigate land below the dam. “After the water is raised at the first place and has irrigated that land, it is then allowed through the channels to fan out over the lower area, for the cultivation of about 1500 feddon. Moreover alongside the dam we have 2 haffirs (reservoirs) for people, livestock, etc with the capacity of 6,000 m cubic and 8,000m cubic”. People can get water for their daily needs. “I am now standing by the stream. Connecting all structures is the earth embankment. It is 1,807 m long and varies in height from 3 m to 60 cms”. “We open the gates when the water is raised. We need to carefully control the water, for example to fill the down stream haffir, or to clean the catchment area”. “The area is divided into upstream and downstream. This is part of the plan. In the rainy season we cultivate downstream and in winter upstream, as the water is held here, even in winter”. “We started work here in May 2008 and completed at the end September 2008. This gave us a chance to test last year using 2 smaller rains”. “We have/we will positively impact on 12,055 people, 2,411 families”. “The community provided the labour, they worked together to help build the embankment, etc. They also worked together to agree and distribute land”. “We are already having to maintain the dam – for example the inlet of the 2 haffirs. We are looking at costs and working with the community”.
