Abstract

This project has been providing a holistic solution to address educational achievement in remote, rural schools in Peru. A standard model for each school proved to be inefficient. We quickly learned that it was important to develop a tailored design for each school to take into account access to electricity, sanitation services and climate context. Also, it was necessary to involve parents and students in the activities. By doing this, the project was able to establish a monitoring system that can not only overlook the safety of the installed equipment but also generate an active demand of ICTs usage in the classroom. It is still early to assess the long-term impact of the project (e.g. improvements in student achievement) but there are already clear indicators of positive changes. a. Access to water and sanitation has been significantly improved in 8 schools, including drinking water and thermal bath systems and in 3 schools, bathrooms with biodigester systems. This is of particular significance as there are high rates of diarrheal diseases and anaemia associated to poor nutrition and lack of hygiene habits in rural areas. b. 80% of students, 80% of parents and 90% of teachers have adopted better hygiene and sanitary practices, such as handwashing c. 9 schools have been provided with ICT equipment and 36 teachers teacher have passed their ICT training course d. Over 90% of Students and teachers are now participating in recycling, waste management and waste campaigns https://practicalaction.org/healthy-schools
