Abstract
Joshna and Jahoural Islam live with their 14 year old daughter in someone else's home. They don't pay rent as they tend to their land and look after their livestock in lieu of payment.Their own home and land was lost in 2013 and soon after they were selected to be a part of the Practical Action project and received two sheep. Unfortunately one of the sheep died, so Joshna and Jahoural decided to sell the remaining sheep and were then able to buy three goats. The first goat gave birth to one kid and carried on to have more - "Now we have five goats and two are pregnant! We can sell one goat for 8000 taka" (around £64). Their lives have been dramatically improved. Before the project Joshna was suffering from health problems, but by selling one of the goats, she was able to afford access to health care. Money from the goats has also enabled the family to send their daughter to school. They can also now eat a healthier diet, having money to afford fish. When asked about their dreams for the future, Joshna replied “We are trying to improve our livelihood. We would like to build our own house on our own land one day.” “This would be good for our daughter, she would have a better future.”
