Abstract
Urban population in south Asia is expanding rapidly, exerting enormous pressure on urban services. Urban environment and poverty are linked closely while lack of very basic facilities such as safe water, better sanitation and hygiene have devastating impacts on health of urban poors. In line with the national target “Universal access to sanitation by 2017” and “Sanitation and Hygiene Master Plan” of Nepal, Gulariya Municipality aimed to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) Gulariya by 2015. To contribute to the municipality plan for ODF, Practical Action is implementing “SAFA & SWASTHA Gulariya project since August 2014. The overall objective of the project is to improve the lives of residents with enhanced access to improved sanitation environment. The project focused to increase coverage of sanitation facilities, enhanced capacity of local stakeholders and piloting innovative solutions in sanitation. The project operates with innovative community mobilisation approaches such as through Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and School Led Total Sanitation (SLTS). The intervention in 14 wards at Gulariya has made remarkable achievements as a result of which, entire Gulariya Municipality has been declared ODF. Moreover, capacities of ten communities in participatory planning and development of Community Action Plans (CAP) has enhanced and local planning process has been mainstreamed. This booklet is our attempt to bring forth the voices of our beneficiaries so that their stories of change are well documented and availed for everyone to experience.
