Abstract

The clinic sees up to 300 patients every week. The vast majority are outpatients, but there are also two beds for patients who need to stay overnight. Additionally, there is a maternity unit that can take up to seven women at one time. Women come here to give birth and also to attend pre-natal and post-natal clinics. There are family planning sessions. There is a vaccination programme for children, cancer screening and facilities for HIV testing and treatment. On average, two or three babies are born every day at the clinic. Serious and long-term cases are transferred to the hospital in Mulanje. Thom has worked at the clinic for four years. For the first year there was no electricity. Electricity arrived in 2016. Thom lives nearby with his brother. Women were giving birth in the dark by candlelight and with only cold water for keeping things clean. A lot of lives have been saved because of this electricity. We can tell if a woman is bleeding after giving birth. and we are able to treat them. We can manage it.
