Abstract

Practical Action Southern Africa is working in partnership with five development organisations in five districts in the semi-arid areas of Zimbabwe to enhance food security and livelihood options of the people. The project is being implemented in five of Zimbabwe's eight rural provinces with each project partner being responsible for specific actions as follows: Strengthen the effectiveness of community-based organisations in natural resource management in environmentally degraded communities in the Changazi Save Catchment Area, Chimanimani (Manicaland) Strengthen the production, processing and marketing capacity of smallholder irrigation farmers in semi-arid Nyanyadzi, Chimanimani (Manicaland) Strengthen the food and livelihood security of HIV and AIDS affected people in Chimanimani district, Manicaland Strengthen the small livestock production and marketing practices among poor vulnerable households in Gwanda's Wards 13 and 18, Matabeleland South To improve livestock's health and product value of resource poor households in Mbire District. Mashonaland Central To strengthen local food production systems of poor rural households in semi-arid areas of Chivi, Masvingo and Zvishavane, Midlands Outcomes: Drought prone communities are facilitated to produce their own food and become less dependent on free food assistance – a shift towards community based approaches and technologies that emphasize the participation of communities in building local resilience, ownership and sustainability of local development initiatives. Under this focus, Practical Action Southern Africa only facilitates development through helping the community to sustain itself and putting smallholder farmers at the centre of development.
