Abstract

Richard Tlou, age 54 lives in Nzenya village in Ward 20 with his wife and 5 of his 8 children aged between 16 and 7. He lost his sight three years ago. Before this he earned his living as a carpenter as well as farming. He is still able to look after a small vegetable garden. He dug the 3 metre deep pit for his latrine himself in a week and also built a well for his farm. “I am no longer providing a spectacle in the bush for anyone who may be passing by. I could not see if I was observed when I had to go to the toilet in the bush. My new toilet is much closer to the house and I can find it by myself by following the fence. It has given me my dignity and will improve the health of my family.” Mark Moyo built the structure of the toilet. He was selected by the community to undertake training in building VIP toilets. He has already built 25 over the last 3 years.
