Abstract

Momotaz Begum is 50 years old and has lived in this community in Mahipur, Bijor Bandh in the Rangpur District of northwest Bangladesh for 40 years. Unusually for Bangladesh, she has never married.  In 2013 she received 2 goats as part of the Shiree project – she had one of her own already.  Now she has 19 goats.  She sold 4 goats last year making 11,000 taka.  In the past she did sewing to earn a living but found this difficult because of problems with her eyes. “The goats are my only source of income, but I do have some help from my brothers and sisters who live nearby.” She prefers looking after the goats to sewing because she has the opportunity to move around more and is not sitting in one place.  “I have gained a passion for goat rearing, I love taking them around and to the fields and having them around me makes me happy.” If the goats are unwell she takes them to the local paravet and buys medicine for them on credit, which she pays back when she can. Paravet training was part of this project but Momotaz joined the project too late to benefit from this.
