Pilot household biogas pilot project at Shalaloub village 10 k east of Kassala city. The pilot was split into phases the first phase in two locations - Shamobo, easy to access prototype, a poor community who purchase firewood and Algabart in Telkuk 65 k from Kassal city, a rural community with no access to LPG, no cultural hindrances, water supply available who collect firewood for free
Stake holders
Networks (KWDA +Algandoul, localities (Kassal+Telkuk ), Institutions (MOA + HAC + FNC + T.V + Radio , Sudan University for tech science & technology )
The aim is to overcome poverty through solving environmental problems with the means to identify economic feasibility, value the less physical benefits from households
Biogas systems using waste from cows converted to biogas for cooking to prevent environmental problems and create investment opportunity to utilize the available free waste, turning the resource into a more valuable product , Significant social, economic and/or environmental benefits, and eliminating negative aspects that would affect the environment
Outcomes
Reduce deforestation, reduce impact of smoke on womens health, replacement of imported fuels, improved health & water quality, more crop production, reduce cost of daily cooking fuel using waste and giving women more time for other tasks
This pilot prototype is monitoring:
Cost of fuel/year (or cost of time getting fuel)
Cost of biogas digester
Time to repay cost of biogas digester in savings on fuel purchase
Expected life span of the digester
Opportunity to increase vegetable production
Savings on health treatments
Earning options for any extra time available
Cost of cooking fuel (total costs of wood, charcoal, LPG, kerosene) over 2 years
Value of 1 m3 of biogas/day, plus fertiliser, plus better health, plus less putrescible wastes, plus 2-4 hours extra per day for other economic purposes.
