Abstract

Project: Kajiado WASH programme Dick is 35, married with two daughters aged eight and three. He works as a farmer and manages a farm in Kajiado District of Kenya. The farm mainly produces tomatoes and onions.  For many years, the farm did not have a water source and would have to rely on rainfall to water the crops. Practical Action worked with Dick and the land owner to install a shallow tube well which now provides a source of water to irrigate the land. They also treat the water and drink it. “It was hard because you were relying on your neighbours. It was not enough to irrigate the land. We employ lots of people. Tomatoes are our first crop, we grow onions too. Without water it’s hard." Talking of the benefits of the shallow tube well, Dick told us: “we treat the water from the shallow well to drink. We will send the crops to Nairobi to sell; it’s a larger market there. Local vendors come and collect crops." “It feels good, we don’t rely on rainfall anymore. It doesn’t matter if the rains come or not, we will still be able to sell. Income will double because we have increased the size of our land. With water you can do a lot. Cook, grow, etc.”
