Abstract
Mncedisi Nkomo is a builder and pump maintenance worker in Bethel Village, Gwanda, Zimbabwe. He explained: "through this project I have learnt to maintain the borehole but I am also now building toilets, before I was building houses. Prior I was getting much less work, but this project has triggered a demand for toilets so I am now able to earn more. I either get paid in kind or by cash. For each toilet I charge between US$80-US$100 or one goat. I now have five goats and the money I have earned means that my children can now go to school. I hope that my children will also want to learn the skills of building. The project has trained three builders in this village. We would like to form a company but need knowledge of this. We would like to get professional qualifications, learn about contracts and get business cards so we can trade in town and earn more money for our families." Mncedisi has benefited from a 5 year project funded by the EU and in partnership with local NGO Moriti Da Dechaba Trust who were delivering on the ground training. The project included rehabilitating a borehole, toilet building and a hygiene training programme. The project has trained 32 pump mechanics and repaired 300 water points.
