Abstract

25 in producer group Bitnoyabad, Rajbari Sadar, Rajbari Meeting: Mixed group of men and women with male president. A criterium for selection was that they all have their own ponds and have done some fishing before. However, only one of them had had any previous contact with government fisheries officers and no one had received training before. The group had used carp species before, but had not provided additional feed for the fish or worked out the number of fingerlings with which to stock the pond. Through the project, they received one day’s training from the government fisheries officer, plus the fortnightly meetings. They found the training useful although some members of the group would have liked longer training – one week instead of one day. They said that the fish were growing well but had not yet been harvested. This would be done in early December. The group had already contacted several traders and wholesalers so that they can sell together and obtain a good price. Some of the women noted that they liked the project particularly because of the collective selling of the fish. Since it was difficult for them to leave home and bargain individually, selling through the producers’ group made it much easier.
