Abstract

You can see Ram Krishna Pyakurel watering his garden in the evening after he finishes his day of teaching in the nearby primary school in Uttargaya. But it’s not a garden of lilies or roses. He is watering a fresh batch of compressed earth blocks prepared in his newly established CSEB enterprise. Spending time tending to the blocks prepared by his all-female staff has recently become his pastime. Pyakurel has served for more than thirty years as a government school teacher. The opportunity to invest in this new enterprise came at the right time, as his retirement date is just around the corner. It is a perfect retirement plan as it will be a decent investment for a little profit and will be something to keep him busy. Most importantly, he can give something back to the community. Pyakurel, with support from Practical Action, established the CSEB production enterprise on March 2017. He and his staff members received a 5-day training on how to produce CSEBs from Build Up Nepal engineers. The small patch of barren land by the road side he owns is now buzzing with activity as an estimated 200 earth bricks are produced every day. Located at the entry point on the only highway to Rasuwa district, it is difficult to miss the roadside activity, which in itself has become an advertisement for people travelling through. So far Pyakurel’s team has produced over 12,500 bricks, and more than 9,500 of these have already been purchased and used to build 8 homes. Pyakurel estimates that he’s already made NRs. 93,410 in net profits from his enterprise, and says that each of his workers has earned an average of NRs. 31,855 from their work on CSEB production.
